Department of Palliative care - hospic type
Some departments of the hospital have been recently renovated and some are still undergoing restructuring, aimed at more efficient use of the bed fund and adaptation to current needs in the
area of health - social care. The city of Prague is still lacking capacities of palliative care beds.
Therefore, the founder - the Congregation of Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo - in collaboration with the hospital - decided to build a comprehensive palliative care center which would provide both
in-patient and out-patient palliative care together with capacities for training for professionals and laymen as well as the patients´ close ones. The newly established
department of palliative care will be located in the reconstructed space of pavilion B. The Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo is the investor.
The bed capacity will be 19 beds which will be used for a maximum of 13 patients, 6 for the accompanying accommodation (all single and double rooms with facilities), examination
room for palliative medicine, operating rooms, lounge, chapel and outdoor terrace with a view of historical Prague. Of course, there is a wheelchair access and a garden at
disposal. The budget is set at CZK 50 million.
The department will host patients with untreteable disease symptoms and complicated treatment. Palliative care focuses on treatment of problems and provision of psychosocial and spiritual
support for the patients and their relatives in order to maintain their quality of life at the highest achievable level.
After completion of the construction phase, the facility will be transferred to hospital facilities department. All minimal necessary equipment is provided for standards, the
maximum rate will be used on the existing hospital furniture. Cost of new equipment is generally estimated at CZK 4 million.
